Match Report

8DERBY 3RDS 1 -- BURTON 2NDS 4 On a cold, murky morning we restarted the league season at Burton, inspired by watching their 1sts v Matlock 1sts in the early game. Talking about early, I take credit for getting Gemma and JULES to the pitch, in and unprecedented, 1st. As players joined us, we see Rach, slightly hung over which brought about Sue's wonderful comment "It's not what I can do for hockey, but what hockey can do for me." It worked and she was soon her usual tenacious self all over the pitch. Ella did a pre-match fashion show, with her new shirt and arm warmers. (sorry if they have a posh name but I don't know one!) The game started and it took 20 minutes for Burton to break down our defence, which was having great fun working out who to mark. Their second came gifted by a poor hit out and third from a clever passing move which beat our marking. A busy half time team talk saw us lining up more defensively second half, which contributed to a 1-1 draw. Gemma was amazing time and again, covering our defensive errors and saving numerous clever and forceful shots. Burton are a young and skilful team and we held them off well until they forced a 4th goal mid half. Late on Jules, still running everywhere, received the ball in their half, calmly ran it into the D and slotted it past the GK at the near post. So with good training rules ringing in our ears, "Last goal wins" we accept the victory. Also we had a perfect record of 100% successful goals to shots .  Thanks to Biff for umpiring. MOM votes were : 1 each for Jackie and me, 2 for Jules and a landslide 10 for Gemma.
