Match Report

DERBY 3RDS 2 - BURTON 3RDS 2

Oh dear! Floods in Derby! How do we get to St Bens? Pentagon Island closed! Nightmare. However did we cope before it was built? And yes, I remember those days!! Those of us who made it in reasonable time, arrived to find a white pitch. "Not frozen" we decided, but then began a warm up routine of sweeping. This involved four small yard brushes and one very large pitch! We soon gave up and 15 mins into the game the pitch was clear. Jules was still trying to find a route, and Jackie E saved the day, rescuing a lost Theresa!!!

So to the game. It's been a stressful day for me, so I'm not sure I remember most of it, however can report that Dave is over surgery and back on the ward demanding food. Sounds positive. Probably fancies some decent cooking before coming home!

Hockey. This was a well matched even game, played in good spirit. Despite pressure and chances we failed to score in the first half and Burton opened the scoring with a well worked attack down their left. We earned penalty corners but were thwarted by their GK.

In the second half we decided to pass to our own team and keep the passes short. (except Claire, Heather and me!) Jan chased down a long ball, sent a clever reverse pass across the D where Becky's shot was saved on the line. This went to Jules who hammered a shot, which the keeper parried back to Becky, who finished with confidence. Burton scored a second after a spell of pressure caught us out of position at the back. Derby then stepped up in style attacking Burton from both sides. A penalty corner saw Jackie E calmly push the ball forward for Jan to slot home past the advancing keeper. 2-2 honours even, and a fair result against a team who were two places above us.

We finished last season with 8 points and at the beginning of Nov this year already have 7. This is good work folks. The team is jelling. Lets keep it going.

Thanks Biff for umpiring.

MOM votes were : 1 each for Heather C and ME (1st of the season!!) 2 each Claire, Rach and Jackie E. A convincing win for speedy Becky with 5.
